I am reading threads on here about the pond filters and am curious about what type of pond filters you use. I was planning on using a suction pump to bring the water into a wet/dry filter that I will build in a large rubbermaid tub and then using another pump to deliver the water back into the pond.

Do I even need biological/mechanical filtration in a pond? I mean little ponds that you fish in don't have fancy pump systems....

There are a few members here that know this stuff...
...but I am still new to it.
I don't think I have the right filter system in my pond...so I can't really give any advice!

You mostly need water circulation.. It does take a while to get a natural bio in a pond that changes temps alot, depends on a bunch of different things, size,amount of fish,plants ect.
I don't have an external filter just a internal pump mine does fine, but it is small if you do have a large area I would recomend a filter..
There is a less chance of making a mistake and hurting your friends

I advise you not to use 2 pumps in your filtration system. If the second pump fails you'll pump your pond dry very quickly. Better to let gravity return the water to your pond.

Filtration allows you to keep more fish in a smaller pond. Fish are not required but I really enjoy my Goldies.
