Sunflowers, are some of my Fav flowers, but I don't grow them because of one simple reason.

The roots and the but "Hoof" at the base of the plant.
They are the hardest things to pull out of the veggie garden bed.

Does anyone have a "trick" or an easier way to remove the Hoof and roots once the season is passed

Leave it till next year...it will have decomposed some and will be easier to dig up, especially after a good rain.

Oh my gosh, Alan, you stole the words
right out of my mouth....

I do clip them off with my clippers, but I leave about 6"~10" or so...
so I have a good amount to grip come next season..
and just lightly tug...
*really there is almost noooo resistance this time of year*
with the spring rains and such, the ground is so moist*

And it attracks worms and such..
You'll find them wrapped and interwoven with in
the root system, so give a gentle shake or two to
give them a chance to get out...
