Will a pothos root by just sticking the leaf in the dirt or do I have to grow a root in water first?

I've done both successfully, but I like the water method so I can see how it is coming.

A leaf by itself will not root in soil or water. Your need a leaf "node" attached that is then inserted in moist soil or in water. The "node" is the bump on the stem where the leaf stem attaches to it.

It is generally easier to root in water first, but it certainly can be done in soil alone.

Thanks for the additional information. I too have often wondered how to do that. I just took a snipping from my big pathos so we shall see soon how I did! smile
