I know this is a very common fern, it belongs to my mother-in-law. What kind is it & how do I start one for myself?

It's a boston fern. As far as propagating goes, I think all you can do is see if she will give you a clump(with roots)to plant.
Maybe someone else has more info?

I recently got a piece off of my grandmother's boston fern, it's not looking so good, but I did all the right things so let's just hope it perks up in a few weeks!

Thanks! I knew it was common...see them all over the place, just never knew what it was.

and sami they actually grow better in our winters down here.i'm fixing to buy another one soon& it will hang outdoors over bar table.as long as is sheltered under awning or something it loves our winters& loves our humidity.I never did have luck doing the spore thing.I'm surprised she grows it in full sun.Mine got waterlogged in /feb when we had that "other wet month"

Really? Better in the winter? I was thinking I would wait until spring but I think, now, maybe I won't.
