I don't think mine are that tall really But the leaves are getting really big the one in the ground looks like it's having a time getting adjusted to the transfer but so far so good it's hanging in there

:) Thanks Diane for continuing our Wonder Egg thread! Yours are doing well. Mark, wow, 9 l/2 inch plants, that's great! My four are outside in their 4 and 6 inch pots reaching for the sun! They are no more than 3 inches, isn't that pitiful. Oh well, they are still alive anyways. I'll get some pics out soon.

Hey Diane, I'm thinkin I may need to transplant again and soon huh? They sure seem to like it outside reaching for that great sun! Here's a look As you can see, they are so very small. I guess I got midgets :) The pots appear large in this pic, but they are only 4 inch pots and one is 6 inch pot. I got a close up.

I didn't transfer mine untill the 'underleaves' started to turn Yellow,, Comfrey told me it was probably because it was getting root bound,, as they get long roots quickly!! Lift your pots up and look at the drain hole, if you can see roots then it's probably time to go to the Next size.. On my last transfer I went to a plastic container~ Don't know if it made a difference BUt I didn't have to water as often~ being outside. It took a couple of weeks before I really saw a difference in the leaf growth but when it happened it realllly happened!! LOLOL

My second batch of seeds are all still standing! And starting to grow their 2nd set of leaves. Not sure what I did wrong the first time, but they seem to be doing okay this time around.

My plants aren't doing so "wonder"ful. They are still little, tiny things, though I did put them outside this week hoping they would grow. I had to bring them in tonight though, because we have a cold front coming through... I can't understand why they aren't growing. I planted them, Jim hooked me up with a "grow" light, and I repotted. They still haven't gotten over two inches tall....

My plants (that have survived me, so far) are in plastic pots, Diane. I just don't know what else to do for them...
Maybe I need to repot into a bigger container again? I am so afraid that I will end up drowning the four that are hanging on still...

Hey, just decided to read this topic. Mine are getting really big!! (WISH I had a camera!!) but not a sign of a flower bud!!! But they are growing good!! I have five, and the largest is 9" from the dirt to the top. All of mine have the spike coming out at the base of every leaf. Who was it that had flower buds, way back? They've never shown any more pictures!!!! That spike is at the place where her flower buds came out. I would really like to see more pictures of hers. Was it Wrennie? Weezie? Comfry? Can't remember. I'm sure one of you will.

Mine are continuing to do well. I may need to transplant them soon. I don't see any roots coming out the bottom of that pot yet. I'll try and get some pics up this weekend. Not sure about that though, I have a very busy week starting tomorrow.

They are in four inch pots, Diane, and they are only a couple of inches tall.... I had mine in a four inch pot Dianna and the leaves started turning yellow and not growing Comfrey told me I probably needed to go to a six inch because the roots are so long , when I took out of the pot yep the roots were very long and I went to a six inch plastic and like I said earlier it just took off after that! I never actually saw any roots coming out of the bottom I just went by the sympthoms detailed By comfreys notes. At least it has worked for her and for me! SHe just noted yellowing lower leaves and not growing time to change out pots

Good news I did have one egg by Easter. Here is an update on what my plant looks like...It is root bound and roots coming out of bottom of the pot and I am afraid to transplant it at this point. Here is a link to my Wonder Egg album: My Wonder Egg Album I had put my plant outdoors, but the weather has turned cold, so I had to bring it back indoors.

Diane, I will try to repot mine into a six inch pot and see if that will help. Thanks for the help...

Beverly, That is fantastic! Was wondering if you would see an egg or two on your plant by Easter! Hooray, hooray. Here's an update on mine. A few days ago, we had a cold snap. I was helping a friend in distress and had forgotten to take mine inside. Here's what I came home to find. I hurrily (is that a word?) still needing spell check, brought them back inside to my window sill. I couldn't believe it, after nursing these babies since 12-19-06. I immediately gave them lukewarm water, then after a few mintues, here's what I saw. Yeah, they are back, the poor little things. I'll be sure to pay more attention to them. We will have warmer weather mid week so I'll take them back outside. Second chance!

Wow Stephanie...that is great that your plants revived after warm water, you must have caught them just in time!!!!
I showed my plant to hubby after I posted my picture and he pointed out to me that there are 3 more eggs on my plant...they are very small right now, and more will not be coming until it warms back up so I can put it back outdoors. Apparently it needs pollination in order to produce eggs which of course it doesn't get indoor. Hubby agreed that I should just break the pot and set the whole thing into a larger pot...It just scares me as I don't want to lose the only plant I have.

Wow Comfrey, thanks for posting those pics. I was wondering. Those are so wonderful!! And an Egg!!!!! I haven't even gotten a flower bud. Also, just now, I read that they have to be outdoors to get pollenated, before they will have an egg!!!!! So I've wasted all my time, waiting for flowers so I can have an egg??!!!

You will get flowers indoors...but the flowers need to be pollinated in order to go ahead and produce the egg. Angelblossom....those thorny things came right before the flower buds started forming, seems like it was a week or maybe two after I saw the thorns is when I had buds forming. My egg is getting bigger. If you go back and look at the picture with the egg you can see to the middle left edge the green round thing which is another egg that is small...I do not know why I never saw it before...not even after looking at the picture. It might just come out of the pot...but it is so large I am afraid to try doing it that way, besides the clay pot it is in is not in very good shape and has a few chips out of one side, so breaking the pot doesn't bother me..just removing it and getting it into another pot that hopefully will be large enough for it to stay in, without damage or trauma to my plant at this point since I have eggs is what concerns me. I think I will try to repot it tomorrow and will report back with what happened and maybe a new picture. I'll try to get some pictures of the other eggs forming.

I counted and there are a total of 7 eggs so far on my plant. I did repot it and so far everything seems fine...It was very root bound...These things once they start growing can really put the roots out. Here are a couple of blurry pictures of other eggs which are small still and of plant after repotted. The weather has warmed back up during the day, so I have been moving it in and out daily and it has more blooms which I hope will get pollinated making more eggs.

comfrey, awesome! Here's an update on mine. Today I transplanted all to 6 inch plastic pots. I'll snap a pic in a few days for you to see. They are still hanging on, but are slow growing. I may experiment and put one in the ground, not sure.

Well we had a huge storm here Tuesday night with 70mph winds, it ripped the siding off of one side of my house and broke several large trees....But even though my wonder egg plant was outside it suffered no damage at all, which was amazing, it is still doing good and I will try to get a new picture later.
Everyone needs to post a picture of their's or give an update on how their plant/plants are doing.

Haven't posted in here in a while.. All of mine are doing OK, they haven't lost anymore leaves though... they are getting bunches of side-shoots with little leaves on them coming off, from where all the larger leaves are: **I'll edit this post with the height measurements in a bit** Two largest ones together[they measure about 11 inches each]: Next biggest--this one is actually doing the best, it has lost the least amount of leaves, and is the 'thickest' and 'fullest'... it's also in different soil than the others-- If you remember me saying a while back that I would test different soils and fertilizer[ my results-- store-bought Miracle Grow potting soil works the best, out of that, seed starting soil, and peat/soil mixture--[it measures about 9.5 inches] : and the smallest one: it only has 5 or so larger leaves, and the small ones just forming[measures 8 inches...]... and if you can see the little leaves forming on this one:

I almost forgot about this topic. I finally transplanted my wonder eggs into bigger pots. They were very rootbound and I hope I didn't damage any of them when I seperated them. Is it safe to put them outside now or only during the day? It's still in the 40's here at night but we are way past our last frost date and wondered if I could just put the pots outside now and leave them there.

It's a plant that grows a fruit that looks just like eggs. From what I've been able to find out it's a type of ornamental eggplant.

Me either, that's why I wanted to try to grow some. This is actually my 2nd attempt. My first set of seeds didn't last long, but this time they seem to be doing okay.

Junie, scroll upwards and you will come to some with the white eggs on them. They will contain the seeds. Even though they are of the eggplant family they are not edible.....Don't they look just like white eggs on there?! They are really cool looking, and a lot of us started some from seed near the same time in December, so we could compare each others plant growth.

Bye the way, Comfrey....I found out on here, after my plants got big, that I had to put them outside to get pollinated before it would produce the egg; but do I have to put them outside before they will even have a flower bud??!! They are getting so big, but not even a bud in sight!!!!

A bunch of us got seeds from each other. I know everyone growing them in this topic started with seeds. I still have quite a few left over from the ones that were sent to me, if you'd like some pm me your address and I'll send them to you.

I don't have pics right now, but 3 of my 4 plants are getting their first bud!!! It's still very tiny, but it's there! Now, what do I do to keep it 'alive'? Must I self-pollinate?

I'm back...I have new buds forming on my plant and the first egg is now turning yellow...Yes they do need pollination in order to produce eggs...So if you see buds then put your plant outdoors, even if you have to bring it back in at night. I'm so happy to to hear alot of you are finally getting buds on your plants!!!

Mark and Shirley, that is great you had buds. Comfrey, as usual, . Mine are coming along slowly. I think I feel stickers on their stems. Hmmm. No sign of a bud. May give two of away soon. Here's what they look like today.

I just found out this morning that there is some sort of animal out there that likes to eat wonder eggs. I had put mine outside to get more sun now that it's warm enough, they've been out there almost 2 weeks with no problems. I went to go to work today and noticed that in one of the pots 2 of the plants were missing. I did find one half buried and the soil was lose in the pot. I guess I'll have to start bringing them in at night? Very frustrating. They are still small and I'm still trying to get them big enough to bud. If it's a nocturnal animal all I know that we have is raccoons and possums. Nothing ever touched my bulbs, why these plants?

Ohh My Cheryl I can't imagine what it might be!!! Even if you set them high up on something the same thing may happen?? Bringing them in at night won't hurt them I don't think/ Christy~~~~~~~ Too funny!!!

I had several buds on just one plant. one of them opened. I set it outside to get pollinated. Should I have had at least had two buds open? I dun know?! Anyway, the outdoors made it almost fall down!! Or else the cool air overnight! (I forgot to bring it in ) I don't know if a bee did its thing or not. I brought it inside before it layed down and died!!! I just don't know if a bee can pollinate just one flower? It can't pollinate it with its own pollin, can it? So, I've had two flowers which have come and gone seperately!! The others don't have any buds even.

Christy! My first original flower fell off... I peeked inside, to find a tiny, tiny, baby egg! I hand-pollinated, as it's been raining the last week and didn't want to start my plants outside in the rain.. sunny today, though!

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MV061 A fact sheet published by the University of Florida's Cooperative Extension Service explains the differences between S. ovigerum (grown as an inedible ornamental plant) and white fruit varieties of S. melongena, which are edible: Fruit color: S. ovigerum fruit is white when immature but turn yellow as they mature. S. melongena fruit remains white at maturity, some with a hint of green. Fruit size: S. ovigerum fruit typically remains small, resembling their namesake hen's eggs in size and shape. S. melongena white varieties grow to typical eggplant size at maturity, significantly larger than the ornamental fruit. _____________________________________________________ The above is what I was sent on the subject-- I have not gone to the web site yet, what does anybody think?? because- I thought the S. Melongena was the edible(all be it bad tasting) one that turned a yellow coloring-- Now I am totally confused. :/

wondereggs directgardening.com there was a bunch of info in here from everyone who grew em, i wrote some down. they can be planted directly outside after frost or inside 6-8weeks before your last frost, i know their tender annuals. when their 4-5 inches tall transplant. if you keep them in a container it should be 3 gallons pots. liquid fertilizer every week can take up to 5 months to egg out purple flowers to white eggs to golden eggs. to harvers eggs they need to be over ripe. i had a lot of damping off pruoblems.so with my last two seedlings i used the 1/3 proxide to a gallon of water. and waterd it. so far so good! good luck with yours! whoo hoo mark!!!! you got baby eggs!

Well, I finally found out what happened to that pot of wonder egg. It wasn't a critter at all, it was a Joey and his basketball. After taking a closer look at it I realized that it was missing soil and there were myterious little piles of extra soil in the garden area. Very slight but I knew something was off. I had asked the girls if anyone knocked over my plant and they said no. So yesterday I asked Joey if he accidentally knocked over my plant, he said it was his basketball and he did try to put it back the way it was so I wouldn't get upset. I told him I wouldn't get upset, I was just confused as to how it came to look that way, reassured him that it was fine, accidents happen, just let me know next time so I'm not thinking that we have a theiving critter out at night.

Here is how most of us got ours to sprout: Just barley cover the seed...like lay the seed on top of the soil and sprinkle a tiny amount of soil over the seed, then mist the soil good, place in a plastic bag, the aquarium might work as long as the moisture is high enough and no mold starts to form. Place in a warm area and the waiting begins, once the seeds sprout...Be for warned they can become root bound very quickly and if not transplanted quick enough you will lose your plant. Good Luck!!!

Comfrey--(Is it Bev??) Thanks so much---I think I will try the bag thing--but I have to come up with something to hold it up. --Cheryl said you all used a bag--I just wasn't sure, how to go about it--- RIght now the seeds are in the seed pellets---I did that because somewhere I read NOT to start them in real soil. I am hoping for the best. Great picture!!---Thanks for posting it---

I just used a zip lock bag...you can place the pellet pots inside a zip lock bag just watch for any sign of mold on the pots...If there is too moisture then unzip the bag and allow alittle air to get in the bag...Too much moisture looks like it rained inside the bag...if you water just mist with a spray bottle. Keep us updated on your progress and when you have sprouts we would love to see your seedlings. Good Luck and do not be discouraged these seeds can be really stubborn and take weeks to sprout. You have to have patience while waiting.

Those look awesome Comfrey. I must sadly say that my last one, that I didn't manage to kill while I was away is still way to small. I might try it again, once I've moved. They got too dry and the roots weren't developing properly. But seeing most of you were able to do it, I will try it again.

Thanks Comfrey-- --My zip loc bag does look like it is raining inside---tomorrow Am I will open it for a while, so as to let it dry out a bit. And thanks for telling me how I should water them--i wondered. Cheryl had told me about the being patient for sprouts to appear, but a reminder is always a good thing. And yes I will keep you all posted on how things are going.

I'm so glad so many people are having success with their wonderegg plants this year! The few seeds that I had started indoors in March did not make it, and died shortly after sowing. BUT... I had a dried up, shriveled and hard egg laying on the surface of the pot that I was trying to overwinter from last year. A few weeks ago, I put this pot outside on my deck railing where it gets full afternoon sun. I then took the seeds out of the old egg, scattered them on the surface and just let it be. Lookie at what I saw 2 days ago!!! I hope there's still time for eggs to form for me this summer! And here is the pathetic stem that is left from last year's plant. It does have some new growths starting to branch out along the stem, and I'm hoping it will fill in with time.

[ i had a lot of damping off problems so with my last two seedlings i used the 1/3 proxide to a gallon of water. and waterd it. so far so good! Christy: Do you mean 1/3 cup peroxide to a gallon of water for watering or 1/3 of a gallon peroxide mixed with 2/3 gallon of water for 1 gallon total to water with??

thanks so much for getting back to me so soon with the "recipe" for the peroxide mixture. i assume all I need to do is have 1/3 amt of peroxide to 2/3 amt. of water, right??--Don't want to k make a gallon all at once-- Thanks for being happy for me---I am happy too. Tickled really--can't wait for them to grow eggs. I just read up on how to care for the sprouts--and as they are not 2 inches high yet, I guess i am leaving them in their "tent" for now. I did put new "tent stakes" up so my little baby wonder eggs do not touch the top of the " greenhouse" they are in though. Now me and my clean pots are just sitting & waiting for the WE's to grow some yet. I do so hope they continue to be healthy. I will keep everyone posted of their progress.
