Hello All!!
I am a new member and I am really trying to get some names of flowers, small bushes/trees, and etc that plant and grow well here in Houston. I live about a mile or so from the water and I have not had much luck planting anything really pretty in my yard. Any tips!! flw

Your in growing zone 9a. I love your types of questions so I'll see what I can come up with plant wise for your location. This is so much fun. Just yell stop when I overload you with choices lol.

Trees

Acer circinatum Maple, Vine
Acer circinatum 'Pacific Fire' Maple, Vine
Smoke tree
Eucalyptus
Royal Poinciana
Ash
Black Tupelo (Black Gum)
Serviceberry, Downy

Shrubs

Acer circinatum 'Little Gem' Maple, Dwarf Vine
Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear'
Butterfly Bush
California Bush Anemone
Blue Mist Spirea
Cistus 'Silver Pink' Rock rose
Pampas Grass
Cynara cardunculus Cardoon
Escallonia 'Apple Blossom'
tree Mallow
Holly Grape
Rosa 'Knock Out' rose

Plants

Most Yarrow will handle zone 9, but it can become invasive.
Giant Hyssop
Anthemis biebersteiniana Hardy Marguerite Daisy
Armeria maritima 'Rubrifolia' Sea Thrift
Wormwood
Milkweed
False Indigo
Berlandiera lyrata Chocolate flower
Bluebeard
Cupid's Dart
Cerinthe m. p. 'Kiwi Blue' Honeywort
Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii Chinese Lantern
Birds of Paradise

Ground Covers

Acaena saccaticupula New Zealand Burr
Cerastium tomentosum Snow-In-Summer
Cotoneaster dammeri Bearberry
Iceplant, Hardy

That was fun. If you ever need more just holler. There are lots of plants for your area. They are just different from more temperate areas.

Pamella welcome to the forum. When we lived in Houston (Magnolia Gardens) we had Magnolia trees,Tropical Hibicus grows well in fact just about any mallow does well there. We had lilac vines and Bushes like you wouldn't beleive. Good Luck . Check your Harris county extention agent they can give you more ideas.
